Double Alpha Academy Shooting Glasses

The DAA glasses come in three styles. From the bottom Alpha, Echo and Lima, Posted in Double Alpha

Acedamy Shooting Glasses

IPSC safety rules dictate that eye protection must be worn when competing in, or just attending, a match. At a competition you will see all types of glasses in use, including sun glasses and reading glasses. Most competitors use specialised safety glasses. These can vary from industrial eye protection with a sport styling, which are relatively inexpensive to customised sports glasses that have a very high price tag.

The Style

With this in mind Saul Kirsch set out to provide competitors with a range of three styles of sports shooting glasses that offered proper eye protection, come in a set with all you need, have a stylish finish and are affordable. Double Alpha provided me with a set of each type to try out.

Alpha Model

The Alpha model offers the serious competitive shooter a complete IPSC shooting glasses set at a reasonable price. The glasses are ANSI Z-87.1 impact approved and the polycarbonate lens offers 100% UV400 protection. The Alpha model is a wraparound one piece lens glasses, with a sturdy polymer fiber reinforced frame and a set of five different interchangeable lenses.

The five interchangeable lenses are:

Clear, offering 92 % light transmission.
Yellow, offering 87 % light transmission and enhanced contrast and depth.
Smoke, offering 35 % light transmission, ideal for moderately sunny days.
Blue Mirror, 22 % light transmission, for bright days on the range.
Rainbow Mirror, 22 % light transmission, for those very sunny days.

The frame is available in matt black, gloss black/blue or gloss black/red and additional frames can be purchased separately and are available for €16.00. The nosepiece is adjustable to allow you to adjust the fit to suit yourself and the side arms provide enough pressure to hold the glasses steady and fit comfortly under ear defenders.

The Alpha model also includes a headband which snaps into place instead of the side arms. The side arms can be removed and the headband can be installed in seconds, without tools and offers you a more secure fitting for those extreme situations.

The arms can be removed from the frame of the Alpha Model and replaced with an elastic headband

Each set also includes a microfiber cleaning cloth and a microfiber carry bag. An optical insert inner frame, which can be fitted with correctional lenses by your optician, clicks into place behind the interchangeable lenses. This allows you to use all the different lens types with the same optical insert. The complete set is packed in a handy hard case, which provides protection and support for all the individual lenses and accessories and can be stored in your range bag.

The Echo Model

The Echo model is an excellent choice for shooters who prefer the two piece lens style shooting glasses. The glasses are ANSI Z-87.1 impact approved, and the polycarbonate lens offers 100% UV400 protection. The two piece lens glasses come with five lens types and a polymer fiber- reinforced frame. The Set is packed in a handy hard case, which provides protection and support for all the individual lenses and accessories. The nosepiece is serrated rubber. Extra frames can be purchased separately for €15.00.

The Echo Model uses a two piece lens in five different lens types

Each Set includes a hard case, one frame, microfiber cleaning cloth and microfiber carry bag, headband strap which attaches to the side arms and an optical insert inner frame which clicks into place behind the interchangeable lenses. The Echo model is similar standard to the Alpha model, but with two piece lenses.

The five pairs of interchangeable lenses are:

Clear, offering 92 % light transmission.
Yellow, offering 87 % light transmission and enhanced contrast and depth.
Smoke, offering 35 % light transmission, ideal for moderately sunny days.
Blue Mirror, 22 % light transmission, for bright days on the range.
Rainbow Mirror, 22 % light transmission, for those very sunny days.

The Echo Model has five different styles of lens, optical insert and hard carry case

The Lima Model

The Lima model is an inexpensive set of glasses, yet comes complete with a set of four lenses IPSC shooting glasses. The glasses are ANSI Z-87.1 impact approved and again the polycarbonate lens offers 100% UV400 protection.

The Lima model has a wide wraparound style lens, with a flexible lightweight polymer, fiber reinforced frame and adjustable length side arms. The set is packed in a handy hard case, which provides protection and support for all the individual lenses and accessories. The nosepiece detaches from the lens and can be transferred quickly and easily from one lens to another as you change the lens colour.

The Lima Model has four different one piece lens styles and offer great value for money

This set includes a hard case, one matt black frame, a microfiber cleaning cloth and a microfiber carry bag. An optical insert inner frame is also included, which clicks on the nosepiece behind the interchangeable lenses.

The four interchangeable lenses are:

Clear, offering 92 % light transmission.
Yellow, offering 87 % light transmission and enhanced contrast and depth.
Smoke, offering 35 % light transmission, ideal for moderately sunny days.
Light Blue Mirror, 35% light transmission, for bright sunny days on the range.

All three styles of DAA glasses can be fitted with an optical insert, the lenses of which can be made by your optician

The three different models of shooting glasses from Double Alpha offer a range of both styles and prices. The Alpha, Echo and Lima models are priced at €75, €65 and €28.50 respectively and offer great value for money. Even the Alpha model at €75 offers great value for money when compared to the prices of specialist glasses for outdoor pursuits. As well as using all three pairs for IPSC shooting I have also used them for mountain biking. I used the Alpha Model during a week of end of season skiing in Grindelwald, Switzerland. I have found all three sets comfortable to use and the lenses can be easily swapped over. I will be using these glasses at IPSC competitions through out this year, including the IPSC World Shoot.
