Spyderco Working Knives

Thinking beyond established knife industry barriers has allowed Spyderco to introduce radical innovations to knife design. These include one handed opening, full or partly serrated blades on a folding knife and a clip to attach a knife to a pocket. Spyderco researches new improved and better performing materials, with function and reliability being the key. The recognisable appearance of Spyderco knives is a result of designing a pocket knife to be a functional tool.

Thinking beyond the established knife industry barriers has allowed Spyderco to introduce new and radical innovations to knife design. These include one handed opening, full or partly serrated blades on a folding knife and a clip to attach a knife to a pocket. Spyderco researches and develops new improved and better performing materials, with function and reliability being the key. The recognisable appearance of Spyderco knives is a result of designing a pocket knife to be an ergonomic functional tool.

In their testing facility Spyderco examine blade sharpness retention, rust resistance and check the force needed to open and close a knife. They also actively search for higher quality and performance enhancing blade steels and handle materials.
Tenacious Folder
The Tenacious FolderBeing tenacious means being persistent, tough and tireless until achieving your goal, which are all definitions worthy of a knife. The mid sized Tenacious has a black G-10 laminate handle, which on the inside have skeletonised steel liners increasing the handle’s rigidity and strength without adding weight or bulky thickness.

The clip on the Tenacious is reversible and can be attached to a pocket or inside a back pack.
The 8Cr13MoV stainless blade is leaf shaped and ground flat from spine to the cutting edge. The blade’s shape coupled with the Spyderco round hole and textured spine jimping allow you to open the blade and position your thumb on the slip proof spine ready for use. A Walker Linerlock (with jimped liner) and the four way pocket clip lets you set your carry to draw the knife from your pocket in your preference. The clip can be set up with the blade tip up or tip down for both left hand or right hand.

The 3 ⅜ inch blade on the Tenacious did a good job of cleaning out this Sika deer.
The Tenacious blade is ⅛ inch ( 3mm ) at its thickest and is available with a plain or serrated edge blade and the total weight of four ounces ( 115g ). The blade is 3 ⅜ inches ( 86mm ) long, with an overall length of 7 ¾ inches ( 197mm ) with a closed length of just under five inches ( 113mm ). It will easily handle an animal up to the size of a Fallow deer.
UK Legal Knife
The UK PenknifeThe knife may be one of man's oldest tools but today it is governed by different restrictions relating to carrying it in nearly every country in the world. This is particularly true regarding pocket knives in the United Kingdom where legal guidelines govern the blade length and function of all pocket knives carried in public. One of these parameters is that folding knives not have blades that lock open. Spyderco addressed this issue by developing a non locking folder expressly for the UK market called the UK Penknife.

On the UK legal note the half moon between the blade and handle to correctly position your index finger. Your thumb rests on the back of the blade. The belt clip is reversible. Note the blades are made from two different steel types; CTS-BD1 and GIN-1.
The blade can be in Drop Point or Leaf shape and is held open by a notched joint at the knife’s pivot. When closing the blade the notch produces roughly twenty pounds of resistance, functionally similar to traditional slip joint pen knives. To achieve a heightened sense of control and comfort, Spyderco designers added a deep finger choil positioning the index finger on the bottom of the blade and handle, directly under the thumb. This lets you grasp nearer the cutting edge with comfort and dexterity. The handle is black G10 with a tension wire clip that carries the knife in the pocket, with the tip up and either left or right handed. The laser cut blade is available in a plain edge and ground flat on both sides.
Rustproof Knife
The Pacific H1 Rustproof KnifeThe Spyderco Pacific rust resistant knives are not just used by those who venture or work both on and near the sea. The design has since been embraced by rescue workers, outdoors men, Emergency Response Teams, who have to cut around a person in an emergency. The Pacific Salt is made with non rusting H1 steel. This H1 material is a precipitation hardened steel containing nitrogen instead of carbon, which cannot rust. The hollow ground blade is available plain edged or fully serrated edge with both configurations offering remarkable cutting performance in and around fresh and saltwater.

You do not have to be on or near the sea to appreciate a rust proof knife. I have used the Spyderco H1 with a 4 inch blade for deer hunting duties this winter.
Textured with a Volcano Grip pattern, the moulded fibre glass reinforced nylon ( FRN ) handle comes in black or visible marine yellow equipped with a reversible titanium pocket clip for right or left handed use. You can thread lanyard cord through the lanyard hole for back up retention when you are working around water ( or anywhere else ), as once dropped, a knife is often irretrievable or lost. With a lanyard around your wrist you can let go of the knife handle to allow both hands to perform other tasks. I have shot deer near to night fall and the yellow handle is invaluable to re-locate this knife when you set it down in the dark.
Making knives that consistently deliver reliable high performance requires an ongoing commitment to research and development and testing. In their testing facility Spyderco examine blade sharpness retention, rust resistance and check the force needed to open and close a knife. They also repeatedly test for stress, wear, optimal heat treating and also actively search for higher quality and performance enhancing blade steels and handle materials. When you purchase a Spyderco you are buying a high quality reliable cutting tool with a comfortable handle, which is designed and manufactured for peak performance. Those who want a quality knife carry a Spyderco.

Spyderco made a range of knives to suit different needs. From the top the four inch blade rust proof H1, the 3 ⅜ inch Tenacious and the UK legal pocket knife.
