The CZ75 SP01 Shadow

The CZ75 SP01 Shadow, Posted in Firearms

Serbia's Snezanna Subasic uses her CZ Shadow at the 2011 World Shoot.

The new generation of CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow pistol was especially adapted from the CZ75 SP01 in accordance from suggestions proposed by users from practical pistol competition, law enforcement and military communities worldwide, with an additional input from Angus Hobdell and the CZ Shooting Team.

                                                             The CZ75 SP01 Shadow

The new generation of CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow pistol was especially adapted from the CZ75 SP01 in accordance from suggestions proposed by users from practical pistol competition, law enforcement and military communities worldwide, with an additional input from the CZ Shooting Team and competitors Angus Hobdell and Adam Tyc. The CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow features no firing pin block, which consequently helps to slightly reduce trigger pull weight and improves the slickness of the trigger travel. The frame of the pistol comes from a new mould that incorporates alterations such as recess beneath the rear of the trigger guard and a beaver tail to enable your hand to achieve a higher grip on the pistol. A slightly reduced power recoil spring originating from standard production CZ 75/85 pistols makes loading and hand cycling the slide easier.

The improvements developed by Angus Hobdell for the SP01 have
been incorporated into manufactured items by CZ and are included on
                          the Shadow version.

Most practical pistol competitors will reload their ammunition, or use lower powered factory ammunition. If you are using more powerful 9mm ammunition you can simply insert a stronger recoil spring. The sights consist of a red fibre optic front sight and tactical “Novak style” rear sight to promote much easier, faster and more accurate target acquisition. The edges of magazine well have been flared or bevelled in order to improve the speed of reloading magazines. This new generation of CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow pistol is appropriate for service use, self-defence and sport shooting events alike.

The development of the CZ75 Shadow came from two angles. The first reason was due to the success of the CZ75 P-01, which is the compact version of the CZ75. This version has been adopted by the Czech Police as their standard issue pistol. The P-01 was also adopted by Greece law enforcement, after a rigorous selection trial for a pistol to arm the Greek Police in the run up to the 2004 Olympics. As well as having better sights, the dust cover of the frame was squared and grooved to accept lights or lasers.

The 9mm CZ75 D Compact version of the CZ75 has been adopted
by law enforcement units as their duty pistol

The second reason was CZ’s commitment to practical pistol competition shooting. The success of the CZ75 Tactical Sport in .40 S&W calibre encouraged CZ to look at other options for practical pistol competition. Having already covered Standard Division, they took a look at Production Division. In this class the pistols used must be factory produced service pistols and not specially developed competition pistols. In Production Division the competitor must position the holster and magazine pouches behind either hip bone and only double action first shot pistols or Glock pistols can be used. All magazines used must be those that the factory supplies with the pistol and Production Division rules state that the magazine can only be loaded with a maximum of 15 rounds.

Production Division has become very popular with women practical pistol competitors. The European Handgun Championships and World Shoot take place in 2013 and 2014 respectively. A lot of the top lady Production Division competitors come from both Russia and Eastern European countries. One of these lady competitors is Russia’s Svetlana Nikolaeva who has produced a great run of match performances in the 2012 European practical pistol competition circuit and will no doubt be trying for a place on the Russian lady’s Production Team for the Europeans and World Shoot.

The CZ75 SP01

The CZ75 SP01

In 2004 Angus Hobdell used an early production SP-01 at the European Practical Pistol Championships. After five days of competition he finished in second place in Production Division. During the Steel Plate Shoot Off Angus finished in first place in Production Division. Angus is originally from the UK and after the 1997 handgun ban moved to the USA in order to continue top level pistol competition shooting. Angus now heads up the CZ Custom Shop in the USA as well as carrying out consultancy and training work in the firearms industry. I tried the SP-01 Angus was using on the practice range and quickly realised that CZ had developed a winner for both law enforcement, military and competition use. In conjunction with CZ – USA Angus developed many of the options that are now available for the Shadow. CZ in the Czech Republic has now made these options available as actual manufactured items.

Sights

The sights on the Shadow are fixed. The rear sight can be adjusted for windage by adjusting it left or right in its dovetail. The foresight is not integral with the slide, but is held in place with a roll pin. On the SP01 both front and rear sights have luminous tritium vials inserted into them; one on the front and two dots on the rear. These glow bright green in conditions of low light or darkness, giving you a viable sight picture with which to deliver accurate shots. These types of sights are a “must” on a pistol for law enforcement, military or defensive use. For practical pistol shooting CZ USA has developed a set of fixed plain black rear sight and red fibre optic front sight which is a good combination for this type of shooting. Thanks to its exceptional accuracy and easy target acquisition even in quick and rapid fire means that the CZ 75 Shadow pistol found its supporters in the field of sport and target shooting events. As the front sight is held in place by a roll pin and the rear sight by a dovetail, this makes changing sights an easy task.

In 2004 Angus Hobdell used this early production SP-01 at the European Practical Pistol Championships. After five days of competition he finished in second place in Production Division and also finished in first place in the steel plate shoot off finals.

One of the features of the Shadow is the way that the slide rails fit inside the frame aka the Sig P210 as opposed to the outside of the frame as found on the M 1911 or Browning High Power. The frame ( and a number of other small parts ) are made from steel castings using the lost wax casting process. The main visible difference between the CZ75 and the CZ Shadow is the lengthening and squaring of the dust cover. The dust cover is grooved with a Picatinney rail on which various lasers and flashlights can be attached.

The CZ Shadow has also proven to be a big success with women
                                      competitors, as shown here with
Switzerland’s Claudia Fricker.

The Grip

The Grip

I find that the grip of the Shadow to be very comfortable. The grips are black rubber with checkering moulded into them and a palm swell to help fill your hand. After market aluminium and wood grips are also available. The curved back strap extends into a tang, which positions your hand so the hammer will not come into contact with ( or bite ) your hand. The front strap and rear strap of the frame are smooth. The griping could be improved if checkering was applied to these metal surfaces. A quick fix can be achieved with the aid of some skateboard tape. The pistol has a minimum of sharp edges that could snag a draw or cut up your hands during rapid manipulations of the pistol. CZ now also produces a range of aluminium grips for the Shadow.

The Barrel

The Barrel

The barrel is 120 mm long and has a six grove rifling twist of one revolution in 250 mm. CZ use both protrusion and hammer forging in the manufacture of their barrels. The barrel and slide use the Browning short recoil locking system where the locking lugs on the barrel mate up with those on the slide. For Shadows that are destined to the Australian market the barrel is 125 mm long to comply with Australian firearms legislation relating to minimum barrel length.

During firing the barrel and slide move back together as one for a short distance until they unlock. Unlike the M1911 that uses a swinging link to unlock the barrel and slide, the Shadow uses a kidney shaped enclosed lug under the chamber of the barrel. This enclosed lug reciprocates on the slide lock lever to lock and unlock the barrel and slide during the firing cycle. There is also no separate barrel bushing.

This improved locking system was first developed by John Browning for his last pistol design, the Browning High Power and was modified into its present form in the Sig P210 and has been used in a number of pistol designs over the years. The design is capable of handling the pressures generated by the 9mm Parabellum cartridge.

Trigger Pull

Trigger Pull

The tuned double action trigger pull on the Shadow trips the scale around 3.0 Kg ( 7 lb ) and the single action worked out around 1.5 Kg ( 3.5 lb ) on the samples which I have tried. On several examples tested the trigger pulls were smooth and constant. The safety catch can be applied when the pistol is in the single action mode, but cannot be applied in the double action mode. The original spur hammer found on the CZ75 was replaced on the Shadow with a ring hammer. CZ now also make a competition hammer that is fitted to the Shadow.

The Shadow can be carried in two modes. Either cocked and locked with a round in the chamber, with the hammer cocked and the safety catch applied. The first round will be fired in the single action mode. The other mode is with a round in the chamber with the hammer lowered. The first round will be fired in the double action mode. The safety lever is up for safe and is swept downwards to fire the pistol and is positioned under the right hand thumb. Sweeping the safety lever down reveals a red dot, which acts as a fire/safe indicator. After you chamber a round you can carefully lower the hammer by pulling the trigger and lowering the hammer slowly using your index finger and thumb. Make sure the pistol is pointing in a safe position when you do this. The first shot can now be fired in the double action mode and all the subsequent shots will be fired in the single action mode.

Russia’s Svetlana Nikolaeva has produced a great run of
match performances in the 2012 European practical pistol
competition circuit with her 9mm CZ Shadow.

There is also the option with a model of the Shadow with a decocking lever instead of a safety catch. This spring-loaded lever faces rearward on the left hand side of the frame. This will allow users to chamber a round, then press down on this lever, which will safely lower the hammer on a live round and then you can fire the first shot in the double action mode. If the Shadow is to be used in Production Division in practical pistol competitions the first shot must be fired in the double action mode.

The trigger guard is large enough to allow firing with a gloved hand. The forward vertical face of the trigger guard is curved to allow the index finger of the support hand to be position here in a two handed grip. The trigger has a smooth surface and is curved to assist the double action firing stroke. The smooth trigger also helps in the transition from double action to single action firing sequence.

Field Strip

Field Strip

To strip the Shadow for cleaning first remove the magazine and lock open the slide and ensure that the pistol is unloaded. Let the slide forward. Move the slide rearwards until the scribed line on the rear left of the slide matches up with a corresponding scribed line on the frame. While holding the slide and frame in this position push on the right side of the slide lock lever, which protrudes from the right hand side of the frame with your finger or thumb. On a new pistol you may need to tap the slide lock lever with something solid to move it. You can use the base of the magazine for this purpose. After removing the slide lock lever the slide and barrel assembly can be removed from the frame. The recoil spring can be removed by slightly compressing it and the barrel can be lifted out. This is as far as you need to go to clean the pistol. Do not attempt to strip down the Shadow any further as there are a lot of small parts and springs, which interlock with each other, so leave any further dismantling to an experienced gunsmith.

barrel, slide lock lever, recoil spring, frame and magazine

Magazines

Magazines

The magazines are made from steel and hold 18 rounds. There are witness holes on the magazine to indicate five, ten or 15 rounds either loaded or remaining. In Production Division a maximum of 15 rounds can be loaded into each magazine the competitor uses. The magazine is easy to load including the last few rounds. The base plate of the magazine can easily be removed allowing for occasional cleaning of the inside of the magazine, spring and follower. The magazine release catch is conventionally located on the left of the frame just behind the trigger guard. When pressed the magazines drop free, which will enable you to perform a speed reload with your support hand while the empty or depleted magazine falls clear of the pistol. The original CZ75 has a flat spring, which acts as a magazine break and is positioned to the rear of the magazine well inside the pistol. This feature is to stop the soldier from losing the magazine on the battlefield. This spring can be removed from the CZ75 to allow the magazines to drop free so you can perform a speed reload and continue firing with the minimum of delay.

The CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow is a full size pistol designed for duty in law enforcement or military service, but also for target shooting or self defence having a large capacity double column magazine holding 18 cartridges of 9mm Parabellum ( 9x19 ) and featuring classic double action / single action ( DA/SA ) firing mechanism. The pistol design is based on proved CZ 75 platform. Grip panels made of aluminium, rubber or wood are provided with a good checkered gripping surface. A long beavertail located at the upper portion of back strap protects shooter's hand against the slide during its rearward movement and enables more deeper and secure grip. A new shaped and robust frame made from steel and the structural design provide long service life, accuracy and reliability even in demanding conditions and environments, which can be expected due to the nature of the work that the specialised units who will use this pistol undertake. The front portion of the pistol frame features integral light or laser rail of MIL-STD-1913 for the attachment of these devices.

CZ75 SP-01 Shadow 2012

The CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow 2012 pistol is different in new procedures and operations added as a part of the production process. These relate to the improved fitting of the barrel to the slide and an improved trigger mechanism. Also different recoil and main springs and newly designed sights and hammer have been fitted to this pistol. The gun has a burnished barrel and its "Orange 2012" name is based principally on its aluminium grips and magazine base pads of that colour. This pistol comes with spare parts and a cleaning kit and is presented in the same carrying case as is used for the CZ 75 TS Czechmate Open Division pistol.

The CZ Shadow 2012 model has distinctive orange grips and magazine base pads. The fit of the barrel to the slide has been improved and the sights and hammer have also been redesigned

Ceská Zbrojovka, a.s., Uherský Brod has been manufacturing small arms since 1936. With over 60 years of experience, in the design and manufacture of small arms CZUB is regarded as on of the small arms leaders of the world. The initial thrust of CZUB's production was military small arms, and later was expanded to include a complete line of sport shooting and hunting arms as well. All CZUB arms share one thing, an uncompromising commitment to quality, both through advanced design, state of the art manufacturing and old world craftsmanship. Over 70 Military, law enforcement and public safety organisations use CZ pistols alone, not to mention the military weapons used by several armies and special ops units world wide. The success of the CZ75 P-01 and CZ’s commitment to competitive pistol shooting lead to the development of the SP-01 Shadow, which is equally suitable for military, law enforcement and defensive use, as well as competitive pistol shooting.
