Those of you who have ever done any rock climbing, or spend time in the outdoors will instantly recognise the name Mammut, as is was probably the make of rope securing you to the side of the mountain. Founded in 1862, Mammut ropes are still produced exclusively in Seon and as ever the label "Made in Switzerland" is a guarantee of quality and reliability.

The instantly recognisable Mammut logo.

As well as its long standing tradition in the manufacture of climbing ropes, Mammut also has decades of experience and knowledge in the design and manufacture of clothing, footwear and other outdoor accessories. The company also relies to a great extent on feedback from those who give their products a lot of hard use. As well as mountaineering their products can also be used for alpine sports, hill walking and other outdoor pursuits. For the past four months I have been using three Mammut products, both on the shooting range, up mountains and many places in between, in my travels around Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland this winter.

Ayako Jacket

Ayako Jacket

The Ayako is a long cut jacket with a two layer GORE-TEX® performance shell, with an overall weight of 0.75 Kg in size XL. The outer shell is made from polyester and the membrane material is Polytetrafluorethylene. Graphite – black in colour and staring at the top it has a zip off and stud attachment hood that can be stored in the collar. There is an easily accessible inner pocket on the left side that can be accessed without unzipping the jacket. There are underarm zips for additional ventilation and two zipped hand pockets. The sleeves have Velcro adjustable cuffs and a draw cord hem at the bottom of the jacket. The Ayako can be supplied with an additional fiberfill liner jacket. This can be zipped in or worn separately.

The Ayako jacket uses a two layer GORE-TEX performance shell, with the outer layer made from polyester

Designed for hill walking and backpacking, I used the Ayako for travelling by plane and railways around several European countries and it has also seen its fair share of snow storms in the European Alps. It has also been used on a lot of range use when both practicing and training on rainy days.

I found the Ayako to be totally waterproof and the underarm vents keep the heat levels under control in warm conditions. The hood can be folded and stored under the collar.

Ultimate Hoody

Ultimate Hoody

Mammut have enhanced their Ultimate jacket with a hood and new design. The Ultimate Hoody is made from full-stretch breathable GORE® WINDSTOPPER® Soft Shell for freedom of movement and wind resistance. This gives you a soft feeling comfortable to wear jacket. The front zip operates in both directions and the underarm ventilation zip travels down the full length of the jacket. This zip also operates in both directions and as well as providing underarm ventilation, this feature also allows you access anything attached at belt level.

With a good base layer under the Ultimate Hoody I found that I could wear the jacket on the very cold days experienced in the European Alps in January.

The Ultimate Hoody is designed as a wind stopper jacket, but I also found that water simple beads off the jacket.

There are two hand pockets and one inside pocket in the left side, all zipped. There are thumb loops on the cuffs. I found these useful to keep the sleeves in position under my ski gloves. Skiing in Austria in March, for a few days it was too warm for a normal ski jacket and wind resistance and full stretch breathable material of the Ultimate Hoody was perfect in these conditions. On the range in the rain I found that water beads off the jacket and the side zips made both a holstered pistol and magazine pouches accessible.

The underarm zip runs all the way to the bottom of the jacket and makes anything attached to your belt accessible.

I found the Ultimate Hoody to be perfect for skiing in calm and warmer conditions.

Impact GTX Boot

Impact GTX Boot

The Impact GTX is a supple all terrain boot designed for extended walking. The velour leather and abrasion resistant textile upper with soft rubber reinforcements offers comfort with a secure fit and ankle support. The Mammut designed Vibram® Tec Hiking sole has a sharp edge, coarse lugged profile to offer good gripping on changing surface texture. The sole’s design was inspired by the sickle shaped hoof of the surefooted ibex mountain goat. The GORE-TEX® Performance Comfort Footwear membrane guarantees the boot’s waterproof credentials and makes them comfortable to wear.

Like the Ayako Jacket I used the Impact boots to get from A to B around European airports and train stations for the past four months. They were also perfect for tramping through snow filled Alpine villages and kept my feet comfortable and dry. Also the laces, once tied did not come undone, which can be an annoying feature of some footwear. The Impact GTX comes in a navy – grey colour and in size European 43 or UK 9 a pair weights in at 1.4 Kg. During the four month test period the conditions on shooting ranges with grass or stoned surfaces were soft and damp. On the conclusion of a days range work a bucket of water and a stiff brush soon had the boots in a clean condition. I found them to be a good choice for walking and travelling.

Today, the Mammut Sports Group generates 70% of its turnover from outside its base country. Its total revenue has increased to over CHF 200 million. Approximately 50% of its turnover is accounted for by clothing, but climbing rope manufacture is still an important area in which Mammut shares world leadership with one other competitor.

Mammut’s success of recent years has been based on products optimally suited to the task in hand and also on excellent customer service. A significant contribution to the firm’s success has been in cooperation with active well known mountaineers and related organisations. This is how a small, traditional family business has developed to become a modern, innovative company, with 350 employees, subsidiary companies in Germany, Japan, Norway and the USA and a worldwide distribution infrastructure.
