Delta SAJ Belgrade
Delta SAJ BelgradePractical shooting club "Delta Specialna Antiteroristicka Jedinica" Belgrade was founded in May 2000 in Belgrade. The nucleus of the club membership was from the anti terrorist unit (SAJ) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia. This Serbian Specialist Police Unit is based just outside Belgrade, on the banks of the River Danube. One of the objectives of the establishment of the club was training members of the SAJ in pistol, rifle and shotgun shooting, by using the principles of the IPSC practical shooting sport, which emphasizes precision shooting at speed. The club members compete mainly in the IPSC Divisions of Production and Standard. The first Delta SAJ competition was in May 2000.
Using his 9mm CZ Shadow Serbia’s Ljubisa Momcilovic finished in second place
in Production Division, just over 3% behind Eric Grauffel.
Entry into Serbia with firearms is a straight forward process. You present your own countries licence or European Firearm Pass and passport to the police at the airport or boarder crossing. You are issued with a visitor’s licence listing what firearms you are bringing into Serbia for the duration of your visit, which costs the equivalent of 17 Euros. On leaving Serbia the visitors licence is returned to the police at your exit point.
Using his STI .40 calibre pistol Hungary’s Gyorgy Batki took
first place in Standard Division.
The pre-match for officials, range officers and those who were working at the match was held over 15th and 16th August and the competitors started arriving on Friday afternoon to register for the main match, which started on Saturday 17th August. On Saturday morning the competitors dispersed to their first stage and match got under way by 09.00 am and consisted of 20 stages, shot all day Saturday and was concluded by early Sunday afternoon.
In the main match the competitors were grouped into squads, and each stage was run by a range officer and / or an International Range Officers Association ( I.R.O.A. ) official. All the range officers put in a lot of effort to keep everything running smoothly and on time and with minimal delays.
Finishing as the second place lady in Standard Division Katalin Bodo was one of the

Match Statistics
Match StatisticsAll five IPSC Competition Divisions were represented at the Delta Open. This also spread into the various categories of lady, junior, senior and super senior. Production and Standard Division were the most popular with 97 and 40 competitors respectively. Open Division had a total of 24 shooters in this category. The number of competitors in Production Division has steadily increased so that it now exceeding Open and Standard Divisions in popularity. This is borne out in other major matches around Europe. Revolver Division had three competitors and Classic Division had eight competitors. A total of 172 competitors completed the match.
France’s Eric Grauffel produced another match winning performance with his
9mm Stock III Tanfoglio to take first place in Production Division at the Delta Open Cup.
20 Stage Match
20 Stage MatchThe 20 stages were spread around the SAJ Delta range complex. This range hosted the 2010 IPSC European Handgun Championships. The range consists of multiple shooting bays with 180 degree arcs of fire. This means that in all the stages the targets can be to the left and right of the competitor, as well as to their front. Additional shooting bays were added to the range complex for the 2010 IPSC Europeans. This gave the Delta Match organisers a lot of scope in how they set out the 20 stages. The match consisted of short stages of 12 rounds; medium stages of up to 24 rounds and long stages of up to 32 rounds. The round count for the match was advertised as 400 rounds, but competitors were using well over 400 rounds each to complete the competition.
Czech Republic competitor Robin Sebo used his 9mm CZ Shadow
to finish in fifth place in Production Division.
As well as static full sized and partial versions, the IPSC Classic targets consisted of moving and swinging versions placed between two and 30 metres from the competitors. Many stages used different forms of metal reactive targets. Full size classic poppers, mini poppers and round plates complemented the paper targets in each stage. I found this competition to be very challenging, not just in the accuracy requirement, but also in deciding which way to shoot each stage. All the stages had different positions from which the targets could be seen, which lead to multiple choices in how you shot each stage. It was also interesting to see the different approach to shooting the stage depending on which IPSC Division you were competing in.
In Lady’s Open Division Martina Sera from the Czech Republic took first place.
The walk through after the briefing gave each competitor the chance to decide their match plan for the stage, as were to take each target or perform a reload. With lots of pepper poppers, swingers and a couple of longer range steel and paper targets, difficult targets were combined with “run and gun” targets in most stages. The stages were designed by Ljubisa Momcilovic and he purposely set out to create multiple choices in every stage as to how the competitor could shoot each stage.

The Delta Cup VI was shot over two days with excellent catering provided on site. This military complex also has a 25 metre swimming pool. As temperatures during the competition reached 34 °C many people took the opportunity to cool down in the pool, or use the showers around the pool both during the lunch break and at the conclusion of each days shooting. The Level III IPSC Delta Cup was very well run in a relaxed ( and warm! ) atmosphere in Serbia’s capital city.
